ABSTRACT

AIM:

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the developed countries worldwide. Recent studies have been showed that inflammatory components may contribute to every stage of atherosclerosis such as initiating, progression and completing. Therefore, some of inflammatory markers have been started to search for as potential new risk factors for coronary hearth diseases and myocardial infarction (MI). So, some cytokines like IL-6 have been studied as a potential new risk factor for MI. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association of the IL-6 -597 G/A gene polymorphism in patients admitted to emergency department with chest pain complaint and diagnosed acute MI.

MATERIAL-METHODS:

This study was included 85 patients (71 men, 13 females) with MI and 85 controls (30 men, 55 females) who have no medical disorders. DNA was extracted by High Pure PCR Template Preparation kit, Roche Diagnostic, Germany. The mutations were determined by Light Cycler Real-Time PCR instruments.

RESULTS:

IL-6 gene polymorphism -597 G/A was not significantly associated with MI. 27,4 % of subjects had GA genotype and 6,0 % of subjects had AA genotype in patients with MI.

CONCLUSION:

The present study confirms that IL-6 -597 G/A polymorphism can not be considered as a risk factor in MI. This study could carry on more subjects or other polymorphisms of IL-6 such as -572 G/C and -174 G/C.
