Acute respiratory distress syndrome is respiratory insufficiency with hypoxemia which may occur in disaster victims suffering from lung trauma or multiple fractures, and after being treated with multiple blood transfusions. Patients should be treated with appropriate hemodynamic, ventilatory and metabolic support. Open lung ventilation and methylprednisolone have also been found useful in treatment.
