Endotracheal intubation is the most secure method of stabilizing a patient who needs to maintain an open airway and effective oxygenation and ventilation. This procedure may even be needed while the patient is still conscious. Patients not able to clear their own secretions, and those needing mechanical ventilation for any reason, are candidates for intubation. This article reviews the standard implementation of an emergency department rapid-sequence intubation protocol.
