Introduction:

Mobile telephones have become an important technological part of the lives of many people, and owning or using one has spread to every age group. This study was conducted to examine the interaction of mobile phone usage with children.

Methods:

A questionnaire regarding cell phone usage was completed by 232 middle school students, aged 12-14 years. Twenty-three questions were answered, and the results analyzed with SPSS for Windows® software.

Results:

In our country, 43% of children have cell phones. Of these, 39% 'own' their phone, and 74% were using their parents' phones. Physiological effects such as headache, tinnitus, dizziness, and an increase in body temperature after using a mobile phone were found in 27% of the children.

Discussion:

Cell phone usage results in symptoms in a large proportion of children. Further studies should be performed to assess the long term effects to determine if permanent damage is being done in this population.
